Identity Document Guide (South Africa)
A South African Identity Document (ID) is one of the most important documents you may be asked to provide during the refugee resettlement process. It is used to verify your identity and personal details.
Two Types Of South African ID
There are currently two types of South African ID documents:
- Green Barcoded ID Book
- Smart ID Card
Both are valid South African identity documents.
If you already have a Green Barcoded ID Book that is in good condition and all details are correct, you do not need to replace it with a Smart ID Card for refugee resettlement purposes.
We recommend scanning your ID in colour and saving it as a PDF file so it is ready to upload if requested later through MyCase or another processing system.
What If I Do Not Have An ID?
If your ID has been lost, stolen, damaged, or you have never obtained one before, you can apply for a new ID through:
- The Department of Home Affairs (DHA)
- A participating South African bank branch that offers Smart ID services
Many applicants find the bank option quicker and more convenient where available.
Applying Through Home Affairs
Home Affairs appointments can be booked online at no cost.
Before booking, check that your preferred Home Affairs branch offers Smart ID services.
If no appointments are available at your preferred branch, some applicants report success by checking the booking system shortly after midnight when new appointment slots may become available.
Arrive on time for your appointment. Late arrivals may be turned away and required to book another appointment.
What To Take To Your Appointment
- Your appointment confirmation or reference number
- Your current ID document (if replacing an existing ID)
- Supporting documents requested by Home Affairs
- Proof of payment if applicable
You do not normally need to bring photographs. Your photograph, fingerprints and signature are usually captured during the appointment.
Cost
- First-time Smart ID Card: Free
- Replacement Smart ID Card: Approximately R140
- Temporary Identity Certificate (if required): Approximately R70
Fees may change over time. Always verify current fees with Home Affairs before applying.
Processing Times
Official processing times are often quoted as approximately 10 to 14 working days.
However, applicant reports vary considerably. Some applicants receive their ID within a few weeks, while others report waiting several months due to system delays, verification requirements, printing backlogs, or local office workloads.
If you need an ID for refugee resettlement processing, apply as early as possible.
First-Time Applicants
If you have never had a South African ID before, Home Affairs may need to perform additional verification checks before issuing your ID. This can increase processing times.
Apply as early as possible and keep all receipts, reference numbers and correspondence.
After Receiving Your ID
- Check that all personal details are correct.
- Scan the document in colour.
- Save a PDF copy.
- Keep a backup copy in a safe location.
- Retain the original document
