Volunteers Information

The Undercover Refugee website and knowledge base are now fully operational, and our volunteer team has already begun creating articles and resources to help South Africans understand the USA refugee resettlement process.

We are looking for additional volunteers who would like to help us expand and improve the information available to the community.

About Undercover Refugee

Undercover Refugee is an independent information project focused on providing educational resources about the USA refugee resettlement process for South Africans.

For security and privacy reasons, the founder remains anonymous. However, volunteers work directly with an identifiable project manager who oversees volunteer training, article review, and day-to-day operations.

Why We Need Volunteers

Our goal is to build a comprehensive knowledge base that answers common questions and helps people better understand the refugee resettlement process.

Volunteers assist by researching information, drafting articles, and helping us expand the resources available on the website.

You do not need to be a professional writer. We are mainly looking for people who can:

• Research information carefully
• Communicate effectively in English
• Follow guidelines and instructions
• Create and submit article drafts

Privacy and Anonymity

Protecting volunteer privacy is important to us.

Volunteers are not required to publish content under their real names. Instead, contributors may choose a nickname or pen name for article credits.

The volunteer application process does not require information such as home addresses or South African ID numbers. Providing a phone number is optional.

Communication is conducted primarily through email and Telegram, allowing volunteers to maintain their preferred level of privacy.

Volunteer Structure

This is not a traditional volunteer group.

Volunteers work individually with the project manager and are assigned tasks independently.

Volunteers do not interact with refugees through this role and do not have access to refugee case information.

In most cases, volunteers will not work directly with other volunteers. This structure helps protect both volunteers and the people who use our resources.

Orientation and Training

Successful applicants will receive an orientation that explains:

• The goals of the project
• Volunteer expectations and guidelines
• Privacy and security practices
• Article-writing procedures
• How to submit article drafts for review

No prior experience is required, and guidance will be provided throughout the process.

How Article Contributions Work

Volunteers do not have direct access to the website administration area or knowledge base publishing system.

Instead, article drafts are submitted to a dedicated Google Drive folder.

The project manager reviews all submissions before approved content is published to the knowledge base.

This review process helps maintain quality, accuracy, and consistency across the website.

Who We Are Looking For

  • People currently living in South Africa who can assist with South Africa-related information
  • People already living in the United States who can assist with settlement and USA-based information

Volunteer Commitment

Volunteer hours are flexible.

You may contribute as little or as much time as your personal circumstances allow, and you are free to stop volunteering at any time if your situation changes.

Volunteer Terms and Conditions

All volunteers are required to review and agree to the Undercover Refugee Volunteer Agreement Terms before commencing volunteer work.

The Volunteer Terms and Conditions explain important matters such as volunteer responsibilities, confidentiality requirements, content ownership, privacy protections, and the procedures for ending a volunteer relationship.

A copy of the Volunteer Terms and Conditions is available in the Legal section of our knowledge base and will also be referenced during the volunteer application process.

Reference Letters

Volunteers who contribute a minimum of 10 approved content contributions may request a volunteer reference letter.

Reference letters are issued on Undercover Refugee letterhead and signed by the project manager.

Once prepared, the reference letter will be made available for download from the volunteer's shared Google Drive folder.

Acceptance of any reference letter remains entirely at the discretion of the employer, institution, organization, or other party receiving it.

How to Apply

If you would like to be considered for a volunteer role, please complete our Volunteer Application Form.

A project manager will review your application and contact suitable applicants with further information.
