Timeline - How Long Does The Application Processing Take?

The U.S. Refugee Admissions Program (USRAP) processes every case individually, which means the time it takes to complete your application will vary based on your specific circumstances.

Most of the preparation for your eligibility interview is managed by a Resettlement Support Center (RSC), which acts as a partner to the U.S. Department of State.

Their role is to help you get your file ready, which includes pre-screening your information, helping you submit your application to USCIS, starting the necessary background security checks, and organizing your medical examinations once you are approved.

After USCIS approves your case, your agent will work with you to plan for your arrival in the United States. They will ask for specific details, such as:

  • The names and contact information of any relatives you may already have in the U.S.

  • Your complete work history and the specific job skills you have to offer.

  • Any special medical or educational needs for you or your family members.

These details help the agencies coordinate where and how you will be resettled.

Regarding your travel, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) typically organizes your flight to the United States.

While the IOM can provide a loan to cover these travel costs, refugees are expected to pay back this loan once they are settled and working in the U.S.

You or your relatives also have the option to pay for these travel expenses in advance if you prefer.
