Who Is A Refugee?
A refugee is someone who has had to leave their home country because they were treated badly or are afraid they will be treated badly in the future.
This happens because of their race, religion, where they come from, their political beliefs, or the group they belong to.
If these people are not in the United States yet, they can ask to join the U.S. Refugee Admissions Program.
If they are already in the United States, they can ask for "asylum," which is a way to stay safely.
Being a refugee is different from moving to a new country just to find a better job or make more money.
Also, people who leave home because of civil wars or natural disasters might not qualify for help under U.S. law.
However, they might be able to get help from the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). You can learn more about them on the UNHCR website.
