Interview - Will USCIS Ask Me Why I Stayed In South Africa For Years If I Was Persecuted?

Yes, you should definitely expect that question. During your in-person interview, USCIS officers will carefully look at the timeline of your situation.

They will want to understand why you chose to stay in South Africa for a long time even though you claim you were being persecuted.

They will consider things like your ability to move to a safer part of the country (called "relocation options") and how consistent your story is about your fear.

It is very important to be honest and clear about your reasons. For example, if you stayed because you were taking care of family, trying to save money to leave, or because you didn't have a safe way to travel until now, be ready to explain that clearly.

The officers want to see if your actions match the level of fear you are describing.

Being prepared to explain these choices calmly and truthfully helps build your credibility.
